Characters vs bytes

Character count and byte count are not always the same. Plain English letters are often one byte in UTF-8, while many emoji, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and accented characters can use multiple bytes.

This matters for database fields, ad copy, SMS-like limits, translation guidelines, product titles, social posts, and data annotation tasks. A sentence may look short on screen but exceed a byte limit in a system that stores UTF-8 text.

Live checking workflow

Paste or type text, then watch the counts update as you edit. If a field is too long, remove repeated words, shorten punctuation-heavy phrases, or replace emoji with text when byte limits are strict.

Important limitation

Different platforms may count line breaks, combined emoji, or normalization forms differently. Use this as a close browser-side check and confirm against the target platform when limits are critical.
