Sales tax is usually calculated as tax amount = price × tax rate. The final total is price + tax amount. For example, an $80 item with 7.5% tax has $6 tax and a final total of $86.

You can also reverse the calculation when a receipt total already includes tax. Divide the total by 1 + tax rate to estimate the pre-tax price. This is useful when checking receipts, splitting bills, or comparing prices between regions.

Local rules matter

Actual tax can depend on city, state, product category, exemptions, shipping, and marketplace rules. Some locations tax prepared food differently from groceries, and some online orders include destination-based rates.
